Citation Network Analysis

Discover how news sources cite each other and identify echo chambers

How Citation Network Analysis Works

What We Analyze

We scan news articles to detect when one source cites, references, or links to another. Each citation creates a connection in the network, revealing patterns of information flow across the media landscape.

  • Hyperlinks: Direct links to other news sources
  • Mentions: Phrases like "according to CNN" or "as reported by Fox News"
  • References: Structured citations in article metadata

Key Metrics Explained

  • Authority Score (PageRank): Measures source credibility based on how often it's cited by other authoritative sources. Higher scores indicate more influential outlets.
  • Echo Chamber Score: Percentage of citations to sources with the same political bias. 100% means a source only cites outlets that share its viewpoint.
  • Insularity Score: How isolated a group of sources is from outside perspectives. Higher scores indicate stronger echo chambers.
  • Cross-Bias Citations: When sources cite outlets with different political leanings, promoting diverse perspectives.
