What We Analyze
We scan news articles to detect when one source cites, references, or links to another. Each citation creates a connection in the network, revealing patterns of information flow across the media landscape.
- • Hyperlinks: Direct links to other news sources
- • Mentions: Phrases like "according to CNN" or "as reported by Fox News"
- • References: Structured citations in article metadata
Key Metrics Explained
- Authority Score (PageRank): Measures source credibility based on how often it's cited by other authoritative sources. Higher scores indicate more influential outlets.
- Echo Chamber Score: Percentage of citations to sources with the same political bias. 100% means a source only cites outlets that share its viewpoint.
- Insularity Score: How isolated a group of sources is from outside perspectives. Higher scores indicate stronger echo chambers.
- Cross-Bias Citations: When sources cite outlets with different political leanings, promoting diverse perspectives.
